Best Methods of Water Purification

Water is an irreplaceable and fundamental component of life. Unfortunately, it can be both a friend and foe, and that’s why it needs to be purified to eliminate all contaminants that pose threat to our wellbeing.

So, which method can you use to purify waterfor residential and commercial use?

  1.   Boiling

This is the simplest and the most obvious water purification method. It is effective because it kills 99.9% of all living things and vaporizes most chemicals. The problem is that boiling removes all oxygen from water and this may result in a flat taste. Boiling also may not remove heavy metals or pesticides in case your water source is contaminated.

  1.   Chlorination

This is the most common technique, likely because chlorine is easily available, cheap, and effective. The downside is chlorine added in large quantities becomes toxic and poisonous. So when used it should be done carefully and sparingly.

  1.   Distillation

This is very similar to boiling, but it requires a bit more equipment and is generally more effective at removing contaminants. It can be quite slow but it is reliable in removing heavy metals and minerals too.

  1.   Reverse osmosis

Drinking water purified with reverse osmosis is the purest choice for any home. Reverse osmosis dissolves inorganic solids, such as fluoride, chlorine, lead, and pesticides. It leaves your water free of bacteria as well as heavy metals.

  1.   Filtration

Filtration is another simple approach to water purification, but it isn’t quite as straightforward. Basically, water is forced through small spaces but contaminants can also pass through. It is quite economical because very little water is wasted. In the market today there are many filters available. But this is not the most effective method since it does not get rid of small particles, bacteria, or heavy metals.
